Another bassline, cooler this time.

This time, one guitar panned left, one panned right, some silly midi drum track I found online and a bassline I played thru my midi keyboard.

Both guitars are Guitar Rig 3, using my current favorite custom preset, the drums are thru Sonar 7’s Session Drummer 2, and the bass is Scarbee Pre-Bass by Native Instruments.

VMWare ESXi – very cool stuff.

I’ve been using VMWare ESXi at home for about a year now. Maybe a little more. Totally cool. Running it on a HP ProLiant DL360G3 with twin procs and 4G of ram. Right now I’ve got Fedora10, Fedora11, Fedora 12, Windows 2003 Server, Ubuntu, RHEL 5.1, RHEL 5.5, and Solaris10x86 on it. Here are some screenshots:

Futzing around with a bassline.

I used the Sonar 7 TTS-1 softsynth to create a bassline in this clip. Two Guitar Rig 3 softsynths for rythym and lead guitar. Drums handled by SessionDrummer2 softsynth.

(Update – I quantized the bassline midi track, panned the guitars left and right, and mastered it with Sonar Boost11…)

Here’s the audio clip:

Here’s a pic of the Sonar 7 workspace.

Quick Jam

My buddy Devin came over and we jammed a bit on some stuff I’ve been learning from Mike. Simple sweep with background rythym.

First two segment I’m on lead, 3rd segment Devin’s on lead.

Nice!!!

Bob Long from the AAA_Imaging group on Yahoo did the post-processing of my M42 data in Photoshop CS. We figured out that the 120s and 180s subs weren’t really useable (I’ll go into more detail later why), but here’s the image he came up with my just my 10x60s subs. Amazing!!! Click on the image for a larger version.

Now I just have to get my gear to a dark site (why did I have to pick winter to get into an outside hobby?) and collect some really good data on this and other things.

M42 – revisited!

Okay, here’s M42 again. This is 10x60s, 5x120s, and 3x180s subexposures, with dark subtraction for each set. Then I combined each of the 3 sets. I didn’t do any stretching as I’m pretty clueless about that stuff. But I was able to sharpen things up. The core is blown out obviously, that’s my next project on this data set.

New piece…

Picked up a William Optics 2″ diagonal to use with both the 8″ SCT and 80mm refractor for visual use. Comes with a nice 1.25″ adapter, and also a 2″ SCT adapter:

Saturday night 11/28

I took the CGEM into the driveway last night, mounted the Orion 80mm ED and the Orion shorttube guidescope on the ADM side by side and away we go….

Lined up both scopes on Deneb, then 2-star aligned the mount, added in 3 calibration stars, did a quick polar alignment (man, the illuminated reticle eyepiece helps totally here), switched the StarShoot autoguider in on the shorttube, and the big Orion SS Pro 2 cam in on the 80mm ED. Swung the rig over to M42 as a test. Fired up PhD guide and started guiding nicely first try after getting focus. Used Maxim DL essentials to get focus (or close enough for a test) on the Orion CCD cam. Was about 38F so I ran a 16′ USB cable from the powered USB hub into the garage and closed the garage door to work in warmer quarters while the laptop controlled everything outside. Pretty slick. 🙂

I’ve got a big streetlamp about 40 feet away and the moon was almost full, so, lots of light pollution…

Exposed a 1 second single full-frame and everything looked good in Maxim DL, altho M42 was low in the frame, but I didn’t care. Made my first error here and set Maxim for 10 30 second autosaves as 1×1 Light Color instead of 1×1 Light Raw and didn’t realize it, but no big deal. If weather permits I’ll try again tonight.

Took 10 30 second darks, without realizing they wouldn’t be useful with the 1×1 lights in color form, and tore everything down and called it a night.

Here’s a screencap of the first raw exposure as seen in .fit format by Maxim (click for larger version):

So, next up, longer exposures of varying length and proper dark subtraction…

Interesting.

Met a guitarist tonite. http://www.michaelfath.com/ and it sounds like I’ll be taking lessons from him. I’ve never actually taken a lesson, scary.

(Update – signed up for lessons. Intimidating for sure, but it’s about time I learned this instrument properly…!)
